Start Your own Blog - how to

Blogging is becoming more popular each year and a lot of people are considering starting their own blog. Here are some great posts from around the web that talk about blogging and how to get into it without having much technical know-how.

First of all check out Starting a new blog? Get your own domain name! Do NOT use a subdomain of typepad.com, wordpress.com, blogspot.com (etc) at How to Blog, an excellent post on the technical side of blogging. In addition, the same author also covers Comparison of WordPress and TypePad by someone who has used both extensively for over a year, which is a great post on selecting the right software platform for your blog.

I first started out blogging using FTP to install the blog I was running - which seemed like a complicated procedure at the time. However I stumbled upon DreamHost which offered a 1-click installation for blogs and found this to be a much simpler process.

  1. Sign up at DreamHost and get $50.00 off using the promotion code: SAVEBIGTIME
  2. You get a free .com domain upon sign-up
  3. Log-in to the control panel, select Goodies, and One-Click Installers and then click Install and Your Blog will be on the world wide web!

It is as simple as that - well, the actual process of blogging can get a bit more complicated, but setting up a blog is most of the technical work done. Pro Blogger outlines 20 Types of Blog Posts - Battling Bloggers Block which is a good read for those who are new to blogging. Can You Really Tell Me Your Ultimate Blogging Plan? is another post worth checking out as well. Why is Your Blog Unsuccessful? by Lorelle offers some insights into forward-planning a blog to avoid making common blogging blunders.

How will people find it?

Blogs are a lot more likely to get noticed by search engines than regular pages on the web - that is one bonus to start with. Garry Conn talks about the importance of Using StumbleUpon To Help Shape and Mold Your Digital Fingerprint to get the word out about your blog. There is also a free e-book with some great tips on blog promotion over at Somewhat Frank.

Making some cash from blogging

Running advertising on your blog can be a great method to earn some extra cash for blogging about relevant content. John Cow presents Top Six Money Making Plugins For WordPress which addresses the use of word press plug-ins to monetize a blog. Pro Blogger also highlights some tips on using Google ads to make cash blogging.

Although far from an end-all be-all guide, I hope that this post has pointed out some places to go to read about blogging and running a successful blog. Thanks for reading.
